Democrats Dominated Election Season
Highlighting key victories from the Blue Sweep.
Happy Thursday, Democrats!
Tuesday night, Democrats secured historic victories with a nationwide Blue Sweep, sending Trump and his Republican buddies a clear message: your reckless agenda is hurting Americans. Democratic candidates offered a clear message of affordability and ensured that voters in their communities knew that it is Democrats who are fighting to lower costs and protect healthcare..
Many of these wins were made possible with the help of grassroots supporters like you. Your donations and help ensured that the DNC was equipped to support Democratic campaigns across the country and up and down the ballot.
This election season, the DNC has made historic investments in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and beyond to mobilize voters and grassroots supporters so that we could organize everywhere to win anywhere. And win we did. From training volunteers across the country to funding key voter outreach efforts, the DNC’s investments prove that when we organize, we win.
This week, we’ll take a look at the key victories that Democrats secured nationwide and how the DNC has been preparing for this election season and beyond. Be sure to tune in TODAY, November 6, at 5 p.m. EST for a post-election chat with the DNC Donor Relations Team on Substack Live, where we will be sharing how your support helped get Democrats elected up and down the ballot.
Abigail Spanberger
Abigail Spanberger made history as the first woman to be elected governor of Virginia. Her historic victory proves that Democrats have momentum nationwide and voters are ready to see change across the country. She won by the largest margin for a Democrat in more than 60 years after shifting nearly every county in Virginia blue.
As the governor-elect, Spanberger is planning to make Virginia safer and more affordable, investing in law enforcement, education, and economic development in the Commonwealth. Spanberger defeated her opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, a staunch opponent of LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive freedoms. With her victory, Spanberger ensures that these freedoms will be protected in Virginia.
Mikie Sherrill
Mikie Sherrill won her race to be elected the 57th governor of New Jersey, making her the first Democratic woman to hold the office. Her victory erased Trump’s gains in 2024 with Black, Hispanic, and AAPI voters, and for the first time in 60 years, a single party has been elected to control the governor’s mansion for three consecutive terms.
As a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Navy helicopter pilot, and federal prosecutor, Sherrill’s experience serving our country paved a path for her to lead the Garden State. Most recently, she served as a United States representative.
As the governor-elect, Sherrill is determined to protect the working class and lower the cost of utilities for New Jerseyans. She vows to fight back against the Trump Administration’s destructive policies and ensure that New Jersey is a safe and affordable place for all.
These critical victories have been supported by the DNC’s historic investments in Virginia and New Jersey. With seven figures of funding, these states’ coordinated campaigns were able to reach record numbers of voters to ensure that they were informed about their candidates and elections. Congratulations to Governors Spanberger and Sherrill!
Pennsylvania Supreme Court Retention Races
Congratulations to Justices Christine Donohue, David Wecht, and Kevin Dougherty for winning their retention races in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court election!
After MAGA Republicans looked to disrupt the Democratic majority on the Court, Pennsylvania voters fought back to retain these justices for another term. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court will be critical for the coming years, as it could decide the fate of election laws, abortion rights, and redistricting across the Commonwealth.
The DNC worked tirelessly to support judicial races in Pennsylvania, providing a six-figure investment to deploy their biggest-ever ground game in an off-year election. This win is on track for a margin of victory of more than 20 points.
California Prop 50
California voters have overwhelmingly supported Proposition 50 to fight back against MAGA redistricting efforts ahead of the 2026 midterms. Now that voters have approved the new maps, the Election Rigging Response Act will become law.
This act is a direct response to Republican power grabs across the country that President Trump pushed for. California will now redraw its 52 congressional districts with new lines that allow Democrats to gain up to five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives — a gain that mirrors the increase in Republican-held seats in Texas as a result of this year’s gerrymandering.
Maine Ballot Question 1
Accessible voting is protected in Maine!
Voters around the state voted ‘no’ on Question 1 yesterday, ensuring that absentee voting remains protected for seniors, voters with disabilities, and rural Maine residents. This referendum question was a direct attack by MAGA Republicans to make it harder to vote, but as results show, people are ready to fight back to protect free and fair elections.
Georgia Public Service Commission
In a huge win for Georgia, Peter Hubbard and Dr. Alicia Johnson won their races to flip their Georgia Public Service Commission seats. They will work to lower utility costs for Georgians’, and have become the first non-federal statewide elected Democrats in nearly twenty years.
Mississippi State Senate
In a critical win in Mississippi, Democratic candidates Theresa Isom, Reginald Jackson, Johnny DuPree, and Justin Crosby won their state legislative elections to pick up two seats in the State Senate. This victory has ended the GOP’s supermajority in the Mississippi Senate and allowed Democrats to meaningfully expand their power in the state as they work to lower costs for Mississippi families, create jobs, and protect health care and rural hospitals.
Zohran Mamdani
Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the mayor of New York City! Mamdani ran to lower costs for New Yorkers, proposing affordable housing and accessible public transportation. With his election, Mamdani hopes to “Trump-proof” New York City, ensuring that the working class, and the services they rely on, are protected. He will be the city’s first Muslim mayor. New York City saw the highest voter turnout for a mayoral election in over 50 years.
Michelle Wu
Congratulations to Michelle Wu, who will remain the mayor of Boston for the next four years! Wu was first elected in 2021, making history as the first woman to be elected to the office. We look forward to seeing her continue to champion environmental protection, accessible public transportation, and affordable housing. Wu has been a relentless critic of the Trump administration and will be an integral part of Democrats’ defense of blue cities amid MAGA’s attacks.
Key Mayoral Wins
Corey O’Connor
Corey O’Connor is now the mayor-elect of Pittsburgh! After defeating Republican challenger Tony Moreno in the general election, he hopes to push Pittsburgh into a new era of growth over the next four years, with a focus on enhancing the police force, creating affordable housing, and supporting all businesses.
Justin Bibb
Congratulations to Justin Bibb, who will remain the mayor of Cleveland for another term! Bibb has focused on making Cleveland safer and more affordable for all its residents. He was the youngest mayor of Cleveland when he took office in 2021 at age 34, and will continue to be a powerful advocate for public safety in the city and across the country.
Aftab Pureval
Congratulations to Aftab Pureval, who continues his time as the first Asian-American mayor of Cincinnati! Under his leadership, Cincinnati established an affordable housing trust fund, completed comprehensive zoning reform, pledged carbon neutrality by 2050, and balanced the city’s budget for the first time in many years.
Vi Lyles
Mayor Vi Lyles will serve the people of Charlotte for her fifth term! She has overseen the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs since 2017 when she took office, and she will continue to guide the growing city towards new economic heights while also investing in mixed-income housing and a new public transit system.
Andre Dickens
Congratulations to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens for winning his second term! Dickens led a $5 billion neighborhood reinvestment plan, pledged the first investment in citywide early education programs, and proposed over $60 million in funding to combat homelessness — the largest in Atlanta history.
Election night proved that Democrats have the momentum needed to stand up to Trump’s dangerous agenda and head into 2026 as a force to be reckoned with. Historic victories nationwide show that the American people have used their voices to protect democracy and defend free and fair elections.
