Today is Juneteenth, a day of celebration, remembrance, and resolve. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the last enslaved Black Americans in the state were free. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and centuries of injustice faced by Black Americans.
More than 60 years after President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, we are now seeing an aggressive reversal as Republicans move to dismantle representation for communities of color. Following the Supreme Court’s Louisiana v. Callais decision, Republicans are redrawing maps to break up minority communities. This undermines districts represented by Democrats, giving Republicans opportunities to take seats.
As we honor this day, we’re committed to continuing the fight for civil rights and dismantling the systems in our country that promote racial discrimination. This Juneteenth, we’re using every tool at our disposal to uphold fair elections and the right to vote.
Here’s how you can take action this weekend:
Take Action In Your Community
From learning how to have meaningful conversations with those in your life to canvassing for candidates who will fight to protect our minority communities, there are endless events in your area to get involved in. Find a volunteer opportunity near you this weekend to take action and help defend the right to vote.
Check Your Voter Registration
As Republicans continue their power grab nationwide, it is more important now than ever to make your voice heard at the ballot box. Take a few minutes to make sure your registration is up to date, and reach out to your community to encourage them to check their registration. The key to fighting back is showing up to the polls this year and letting Republicans know we won’t tolerate their reckless scheme.
Make sure you know your rights at the polls. Download our guide and share it with your community to be prepared on Election Day.
Volunteer With The Voter Protection Team
The DNC’s Voter Protection team is doing critical, on-the-ground work to ensure our elections remain free and fair this November and beyond. Interested in working with us? Fill out the interest form to get involved today.
