We Fact Checked Trump’s State of the Union So You Don’t Have To
Last night, Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address, which was nothing short of one long fabrication.
Happy Wednesday, Democrats!
Last night, Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address, which was nothing short of one long fabrication. The State of the Union is an opportunity for the president to report on the current condition of the United States and share their priorities for the year ahead, but that looked a lot different this year.
Trump took every opportunity last night to lie about the state of our nation. He claimed his administration is improving the lives of Americans, but a year in, Trump’s presidency has meant higher costs, corruption, and chaos for the American people.
As a matter of fact, Donald Trump was at his lowest-ever approval rating going into a State of the Union address. Americans are fed up with the lies and deceit coming from the president and want clear, honest leadership.

Last night’s State of the Union address may have felt confusing and even overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to fact-check the biggest claims Trump made last night in order to hold him accountable and deliver the truth to readers. From the economy to immigration, we’re here with nothing but the facts to counter Trump’s chaotic speech last night.
Trump: “My administration has driven core inflation down to the lowest level in more than five years.”
Last night, Trump attempted to flaunt his economy, saying, “We are doing really well. Those prices are plummeting downward.”
The reality? A majority of Americans report that they are worse off than they were a year ago. Despite promising to lower costs on day one, life has only gotten more expensive thanks toTrump’s tariffs and trade war. Families are struggling to afford rent, groceries, and health care as a result of the administration’s disastrous policies.
Trump: “We have more jobs, more people working today than ever before in the history of our country.”
Trump’s claim last night that the job market is the best it’s ever been is far from the truth.
Trump’s policies are taking a wrecking ball to our job markets and throwing the economy into chaos, with January 2026 seeing the largest number of monthly layoffs since the Great Recession in 2009. Trump can boast all he wants about how great his administration is handling the job market, but numbers don’t lie. Americans are struggling to afford high costs, small businesses are going under, and local industries are falling apart.
Trump: “We now have the strongest and most secure border in American history by far.”
In his speech, Trump was proud to talk about how his administration is handling immigration.
The truth is that Americans are far from happy with the Trump administration. Following the senseless killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents, a majority of Americans, including 68 percent of independents, say ICE’s actions are making America less safe. As much as Trump wants to brag about his handling of the issue, his approval rating on immigration continues to plummet following the chaos and violence in Minneapolis. Polling shows net approval of ICE down to -22. Trump’s overall approval rating also continues to tank, and he’s underwater on immigration (-20), once considered his strongest issue.
Trump: “Last year, I urged this Congress to begin the mission by passing the largest tax cuts in American history and our Republican majorities delivered so beautifully.”
Trump attempted to twist the truth to Americans about his billionaire-first tax law. He claimed time and time again that his policy would result in a decrease in taxes for Americans.
The reality? Trump’s billionaire-first tax bill provides more in tax breaks to the top 1% than to the bottom 80% COMBINED, and is expected to raise taxes on the poorest 40% of Americans. While millions of working families are struggling to afford groceries, utilities, and rent, Trump chose to sell them out so he could give his ultrawealthy friends and donors an extra buck.
Trump: “One of the primary reasons for our country’s stunning economic turnaround… [was] tariffs.”
Donald Trump promised to cut costs Day One, a claim he repeated over and over again last night. Instead, his tariffs and chaotic trade wars have led to higher prices, unaffordable health care, and the worst job market in years.
The facts show that U.S. consumers paid 95 percent of the costs of Trump’s unlawful tariffs. The Supreme Court even ruled that Donald Trump’s disastrous tariffs are illegal, rejecting the Trump administration’s claim that it has unilateral authority to enact Trump’s unhinged trade war. Trump must pay the American people back after raising costs and sending the economy into a spiral. The Supreme Court’s historic decision is a step in the right direction to rein in Trump’s illegal tariff taxes — but it can’t undo the damage Trump has already done to working families and small businesses that are reeling from high prices and a faltering economy.
While Republicans are Breaking, Democrats are Winning
Last night’s State of the Union proved that the MAGA coalition is cracking under the lies and deception coming from Trump. Democrats are fighting back and winning: in the courts, in Congress, and at the polls.
Since 2025, Democrats have won or overperformed in 251 out of 281 key races (nearly 90 percent) nationwide. Democrats have been organizing anywhere and everywhere, addressing the issues that Americans care about most, instead of pushing billionaire-first policies like Trump and Republicans in Congress. As a matter of fact, Democrats have flipped 26 state legislative seats since Trump took office, while Republicans have flipped zero.
While last night’s address gave viewers a false sense of the state of our union, Democrats are working around the clock to reach voters so we can win big this year. From pushing to lower costs to making our communities safer, Democrats are fighting each and every day to make America a better place for all.
