John Ewing Jr. Wins Omaha’s Mayoral Election, Defeating the Longest-Serving GOP Mayor in the Country
Last night, Democrat John W. Ewing won Omaha’s mayoral election, defeating long-serving Republican incumbent Jean Stothert and becoming the first Black mayor of Omaha.
Last night, Democrat John W. Ewing won Omaha’s mayoral election, defeating long-serving Republican incumbent Jean Stothert and becoming the first Black mayor of Omaha.
This win was not luck. It’s the result of strategic Democratic investments made by Nebraska Democrats, the Democratic National Committee, and supporters like you who answered our call to action last week to get out the vote to secure another important Democratic win this year.
Democrats continue to overperform in election after election this year, with a +26 point gain in Iowa, down-ballot wins in Nebraska and Texas, and Susan Crawford’s double-digit victory in Wisconsin. We are organizing everywhere, and we are winning everywhere.
Ewing’s win last night was a special one, as he defeated a three-term Republican incumbent who many considered unbeatable. Born and raised in North Omaha, Ewing has dedicated his life to public service. He has worked for 25 years in the Omaha Police Department, served 18 years as Douglas County Treasurer, and is an ordained minister at Salem Baptist Church.
This victory is a testament to our resilience as a Party and our commitment to fighting against Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, not just in traditional swing states, but everywhere. There will be more down-ballot elections this year, more seats to flip, and more Democrats who will need our support. I hope you will continue to join grassroots supporters across the country as we work to build our momentum.
I am grateful to have you in this fight with us.
